Don Pachi Estate
Background
Don Pachi Estate is the oldest coffee farm in Panama, founded in 1873 by Italian immigrant Antonio Serracín Sr. In 1963, Francisco Serracín ("Don Pachi") brought the first Geisha seeds from a lab in Costa Rica and planted them on the farm, hoping the volcanic soil and climate of Boquete would help. Initially everyone thought the variety was worthless — the plants produced very little coffee and grew oddly.
In 2004, Don Pachi entered his unwashed Geisha into the Taste of Panama competition and it blew everyone away. The Geisha from Don Pachi is the source from which other Panama Geisha coffees developed, including the famous Hacienda La Esmeralda lots. Don Pachi became known as the "Godfather of Geisha" and passed away in 2016 at age 78. The estate is now run by Francisco Seracín Jr.
